Focus on the right stuff

I am currently coaching quite a number of people and it is fun to see them transform magnificently. I think I have mentioned it earlier, but there is nothing greater in my current job to see how people start to learn how to play with the pictures and sounds in their mind and then, suddenly move on to change.

Sometimes, they cannot believe that it is possible.

One coachee mentioned to me that about hundred years back, people would have called me magician. I am not a magician, I am just “teaching” people how to use the grey material in their head.

A couple of times, coachees wondered, why change is so fast!! I mean, we all have been educated that things take time, right? Who is challenging this perception?

Let me tell you a story. I coached a CEO recently who is the kind of person, one would admire. A CEO of his own company, he is dedicated to make the company grow. Spends huge amount of time working at its success and clearly, he has got it. There was just one issue that hold him back.

He froze when he believed that something was too big for him, or someone was simply better in some area of interest. Something too bit means, to go on TV and talk in a life show. Speaking in front of people and knowing that it is your turn to speak soon. Result – great fear.

Better in some area in relation to anything you can think of – from billiard, to normal conversation with his friends and someone speaks very good English. Result – great fear.

Can you see the challenge he faced?

Anyway, I initially worked with him for about 7 hours, when he was setting himself up for failure. He was supposed to speak somewhere, and initially, everything we did worked. Suddenly, the old fear came back. He was surprised and wondered what happened.

Our analysis was quite interesting.

While he was getting ready to speak, and applied the techniques that I taught him, he was also waiting for his fear to return. Somehow he couldn’t believe that it was gone that fast. After years of carrying it with him.

Of course, when we focus on something, we put energy onto it. “You will see it when you believe it,” is one saying. So he was okay until he started to search for his and the beast came back.

It took us another session to totally eliminate it, but we also needed to analyse the process. Instead of focusing on the process and congratulating himself of what he had achieved – a glass half full – he was doubting that the speed of change was sufficient – a glass half empty.

So change is easy, but then, we also need to celebrate the small gains and wins. To get the momentum going. To accelerate your speed of change. To teach your mind to believe.

And when you see it, simply believe it.

Change is easy and fast!!
