Is mind power and mind control possible with NLP or hypnosis?

Ah, ever so often, this question comes up. Can you control other people’s mind with hypnosis or NLP? People quickly look away, since they are worried that I am able to send them straight into trance once they look into my eyes. Nervous laughters, when I show pictures of hypnotised individuals sitting somewhat drowsy in a chair.

Believe me, my work would be so much easier when I would be able to control someone’s mind. I would be rich, man!! I would go to people and ask them to sign up for my courses. Behavioural change wouldn’t take 10-15 hours, but I could change behaviour in just a few minutes, because, hey – I can control you.

But be assured. There is no such thing as Mind Control. I won’t be able to open your skull with my will alone and then, invisibly go inside your brain to daze it. That is not my job – these guys are called neuro-surgeons and they usually use anesthesia to daze you.

Hypnosis is defined as a state of heightened awareness. Imagine, that you are in a hypnotic state already, when you start to feel drowsy after a heavy meal. Or when you listen to conference speakers and suddenly start day-dreaming. Another example is, when you drive on the highway and go into trance – the highway hynosis. When I hypnotise someone, or work with them wit NLP or Time Line Therapy (TM), I can only give directions and suggestions. I can say “close your eyes and relax” and hope, they follow my instructions. I can only say “relax the muscles around your eyes”, and assume they are doing it. I can only say “in a moment, you begin to feel more and more relaxed”, and hope that they are starting to do so. I cannot force it down their throat, so to speak. I cannot shout “hey, didn’t I tell you to relax, don’t you understand?” Really, that is all there is. They need to follow instructions and suggestions, and this is accomplished by deep trust and great rapport. Otherwise, no, I cannot control someones mind.

NLP is mind control only in one sense of the word – I can control my own mind. I can decide when I want to be angry, sad, out of control, or start blaming others (about 2 hours per week). i can chose to be happy, motivated, energetic, passionate, confident, when I want to. Or relaxed, and calm and serene. Because NLP helps me to gain access to my own habits and feelings. I can observe myself when I am not productive and intervene.

I realise when there is still “stuff” inside of me. Like currently, I am coaching a very high-level Mat Salleh CEO. The first time I met him, he stood up from his chair, and I realised that he is about one and a half heads taller than me with really big shoulders. Initially, I felt daunted, even so I am pretty confident. In addition, he is speaking kind of loud, at least sometimes, something to get used to. In addition, he is really high level. I know many CEOs from many leading organisations from former lifes in Hewitt Associates, but here I was suppose to coach someone. My learning was that hey – here is something to learn. That is great, I feel a bit shaken, where is this coming from? I got over it quickly, but it was an amazing learning and a great journey.

So, if anyone tells you that you can control someones mind with NLP or hypnosis, just have a good laughter, give them my number and ask them to call me. Or, refer them to this entry.
