A while ago, I asked, what will people or do more of or less of during a crisis or before a crisis.
The discussions about a possible recession rage. Everywhere I go, wherever I hold a speech, attend a seminar or conference, it is the topic number one. Some call it the perfect storm, others the depression of the century. Some estimate the length of the crisis at 6 months, others say it might be 2-3 years.
Are people getting paralysed? I hope not.
Yesterday I had an interesting discussion and once again, we came to the same topic. I was asked how people and companies should prepare.
Now I think we should prepare. But then, my theory is that when we prepare, we work harder, smarter and think through actions faster and more agile. We re-look processes. We increase operational efficiency. We talk to customers more often. Ultimately, we become more focused on our work and how we develop it. We cannot do more.
But do you know what I believe the impact could be?
When we do all this, we actually become better in what we are doing. Remember your last annual leave. Let’s say your last day before the holiday was on a Friday and you worked hard to clear the desk. In fact, people say that we work harder before and just after a holiday. (I can see your nod!!). You also increased productivity. May be pushed it up by 20-30%. You also worked smarter, delegated more communicated and prepared your staff.
Do you actually see the parallel between the economic crisis, your preparation for it and the preparation for your annual leave?
Imagine the crisis hits in 6 months time. If you work at highest productivity for the next 6 months, which includes reviewing operations, managing customers expectations and upgrading of skills, may be, we instead of a crisis get a very dramatic upswing. We might just forget the crisis!
The worse result that you can get is that you still get hit by the crisis. But you might survive, because you worked harder to prepare. You work smarter through the crisis. You come out of it meaner and leaner.
