You are fired – retrenchment or the fear of what comes next!

We all know Donald Trump’s show “The Apprentice” and how it always ends with “You Are Fired”. It is nice to sit in front of the TV and watch how others get fired.

But now, it happens more and more in real life. Real companies fire Real People.

I do a lot of career coaching in the sense that I help them get over the period of losing a job to finding a new one. It involves resume service, interview advice, creating a good statement of what to say when someone calls, how to handle headhunters, apply to jobs and so on.

People of all kind loose their jobs. It is so sad to see them crying. Having spend a lot of time with a company and suddenly it comes to an end. The outlook going forward suddenly turns dark. What about my family? I still worked on a project, what will now happen to it? Why me? Why now? I was the best in my team!

Questions that cannot always be answered. The statement – it’s business, and nothing personal, doesn’t sound really right. It is personal, always. Retrenchment is confronting personal obligations, personal fears, and change. What comes next? How to pay the bills? Where to get the money for the next loan? What will the next company be like? Their culture, their people? What if I don’t like it there?

I remember when I got retrenched in 2005. From one best employer. When I was told it was the end of the road for my department. The world suddenly shrunk.

Managers delivering the bad news don’t take it easy either, but they still have the job. They can come back the next day. They still receive a paycheck. This is different.

It is about change and coping with change. It is drastic, because it hits us hard.

It hits us at our identity level. We were our job. The backbone of the company. Gave a lot to them. Beat performance levels and managed KPIs. The statement “I am working with XXX” counted for something. The company was us and we were them. It was deep in our neurology.

I am helping them as best as I can. Using a lot of NLP, covertly, to bring them back on track. But I cannot promise them a job.

But I know that I am happy that I don’t need to confront this news anymore. That now, I am responsible for my own destiny.

As NLP Trainer and NLP Coach. And that I took steps, way back in 2004, to get ready on this new career, at a time, when I didn’t know that I would need it, just 2 years later. I am happy that I set the stage early, for a new career.
