The structure of thoughts

Too many people believe that thoughts are just about the little voice in your head. This is actually just one component of it.

A thought is composed of a couple of other ingredients.

The visuals – the pictures that come to your mind when you have a thought?
The sounds – what kind of sounds do you have in your mind when you have a thought?
The feelings – what kind of feelings do you have, when you have that thought?
The self-talk – what are you saying to yourself when you have that thought?

Self-talk is how we label our experience. We define our environment and start to “talk to ourselves” internally. Postive self-talk is what most seminars teach. Self-talk are our affirmations.

Now – you will only reach your goal, or overcome your limits when all of the above is aligned. When you set out to have a goal – what are you seeing, hearing, feeling and saying to yourself about it?

Are you only saying to yourself – “I can do it, I am confident, yes, I can do it!”

If you get a strange feeling inside, such as fear, or anxiety, your inner workings is not aligned. You are out of sync. There was a time, when one organiser asked me if I could train 1,000 people at once. Sure, I said, and imagined myself to become the Anthony Robbins of Malaysia.

While I said that, I have a strange feeling inside of me – it was like – “oops, aren’t you taking on too much by yourself?” It was a little doubt that I couldn’t manage it. That a 1,000 people are too much at that point of time.

I was out of sync. My mind was ready for a lower number and gave me a warning. I listened to it and now, I am ready for 1,000 people.

It could have been the pictures that I carry in my mind. They might be out of sync, and when I say I can present on and moderate a conference easily, then what about the pictures in my mind? Do I see myself succeeding, or do I remember situations, where I wasn’t so successful? Now, there is no problem anymore, as presenting became easy for me. But there was a time, when the pictures in my mind were different.

In the same fashion, what kind of sounds do I hear? Do i hear people talking positively inside my head or what?

Lastly, how do I talk to myself, the self-talk, mentioned above. This is important for your success as well!! It is your support system, talking about all that has come before, such as the pictures, the sounds and the feelings. The self-talk describes this experience.

Nowadays, whenever I get the strange feeling, or have misaligned pictures or sounds, I wonder, what is there to learn. And I get excited, because I discover a new limit to push inside of me.

It is easy to change your mind. But it is important to realise, that thoughts are not just thoughts but that there is a structure to thoughts.
